I wanted to do it right, and that meant post-poning the book until I had more time. So as of now I have all my images and text designed, my page layouts are all done, and the title is finalized:: “<em>Pipe Dreams: photographs of my grandfather smoking a pipe</em>”</p> <p>all I have yet to do is print it all out and bind the thing!!! And finish designing the packaging box for the book. But I’m pumped that the light at the end is starting to shine. I hadn’t given much thought to what I miss most about him, so I said the first thing that came to mind:</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>            “The smell of his pipe.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>            “The smell of his pipe…” he repeated with a hint of confusion.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>I knew it sounded strange. But in that moment, I think I would have given anything just to smell it. To be engulfed in one of his hugs- complete with a jolly groan that translated to, ”Ooooh, I love you so much.” My face would press against his sweater-covered chest and I would be immersed in the pleasant aroma of his pipe. It’s not really about the smell, but what the smell represented for me: comfort, security, wisdom, tough love, harder times, endless stories and a lifetime of lessons. To this day I think of him often and fondly. He is definitely hit or miss sometimes but overall he really has close to perfected his style. I guess i consider this a collage style.. but what attracts me to it is how seamless he is.
